Peter Sisario of Scotia, NY will speak at the Schenectady County Historical Society on the topic of how to conduct research on Italian-American family history, Saturday, January 10 at 2:00 pm. Mr. Sisario is a genealogist who has learned a lot of research tricks, skills and shortcuts by doing his own family research and by volunteering at the National Archives in Pittsfield, MA. His talk will be held at 32 Washington Avenue in the historic Stockade District, Schenectady, NY. This program is free and open to the public. The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) will offer a Guided Hike to Esther Mountain on January 10, 2009. Whether you are working on your Winter 46, uncomfortable approaching “trailless” high peaks on your own, or just looking for a great winter hike in the mountains, these one-day guided trips are for you. This course will introduce you to the nuances of hiking off trail through a guided trip to the summit. We’ll discuss safe low-impact travel, route selection, off trail navigation, and the rich natural history of the Adirondacks. Esther Mountain (elev. 4,240’) is a 9.5-mile round trip hike. This hike is strenuous and will require a full day of snowshoeing. The price of the trip is $55 for members of ADK and $60 for non-members and includes guide and instruction. The East Greenbush Library has a variety of adult free programming coming up in January 2009. On Saturday, January 10 from 11 am to 4 pm, come “Make a May Day Doorknob Basket”. Celebrate the coming of spring by making this diminutive basket intended to be hung on a doorknob. Just the right size, 5-6 inches, it will hold a small pot of flowers or a spring bouquet of your keys! Your home will be ready to welcome spring. Wear comfortable clothes and bring an old towel. Everything else will be provided. Call the library to register for this class early as class size will be limited. On Tuesday, January 13 at 6:30 pm, a workshop “Handling Stress with Nutrition” will be offered. What we eat directly affects our ability to deal with stress in our daily lives. Rich Neumann presents this workshop to discover how the food choices we make everyday profoundly impact our physical as well as emotional being. A workshop, ”Roth Redos and Other Hot IRA Topics” will be presented at the library by Robert L. Wolff, J.D., L.L.M. tax on Thursday, January 15 at 6:00 pm. The workshop will cover the following topics, followed by a question & answer period: How to undo a Roth conversion in a down market, why now may be a good time to do a Roth conversion, planning for a spousal rollover; and using a qualified IRA inheritance trust for asset protection. Mr. Wolff is certified as an elder law attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation, and has been designated a chartered retirement planning counselor by the College of Financial Planning. During the cold war, nuclear submarines were used to conduct special operations to acquire intelligence information. On Sunday, January 25 at 2:00 pm, Ray Misiewicz will present a talk entitled “Silent War”. Mr. Misiewicz will take you on the exploits of the USS Halibut (SSN-587), USS Seawolf (SSN-575) and USS Parche (SSN-683) as they monitor activity in the Sea of Okhotsk and the Barents Sea during the 1970s-1980s. Based on the stories in the recent book, Blind Man’s Bluff, learn how the missions were planned and then travel with Mr. Misiewicz as these boats execute their missions. The Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) will offer an Introduction to Snowshoeing workshop on January 11, 2009. Our Intro to Snowshoeing program is a great way to experience the freedom and fun of snowshoeing. We’ll spend a full day snowshoeing in the beautiful High Peaks Wilderness. Our focus will be on learning about safe winter travel and some basic techniques that will increase your enjoyment of this activity. Your instructor will also share bits of natural history such on topics such as animal tracking and winter ecology. This program is suited for adults and children 12 and older. Time: 10 am – 4 pm.
